GMX mail IMAP settings

with 25 comments

Incoming server: imap.gmx.com

Port: 143

Uncheck TLS

Username: yourname@gmx.com

Outgoing server: mail.gmx.com

port: 465

SSL on

Username: yourname@gmx.com

Same settings go for Thunderbird, Eudora, Opera mail, etc.
I’m still using fetchmail and mutt. Old habits die hard.

My gmail account has been relegated to usenet/backup duties.

Like at Raja Jee, my outgoing’ setting also doesn’t work.
I don’t know why, because they are exactly same like yours. ???

  7. Hi,

I am behind a firewall and port 143 and 25 are blocked, is there any way I can configure the GMX mail.

    Thanks,

  8. Madhu:

You can do either of two things:
    1. Configure the firewall (or bug your network admin to do this for you) to accept incoming and outgoing in ports 143 and 25, respectively.

    2. Learn about SSH Tunneling/SSH port forwarding. This is easy enough if you are on some kind of a Unix machine. If you’re on windows, install cygwin with ssh or putty. Clue: use the “-L” option of ssh.

    Some useful links:

    putty specific:

    Hope this helps.

  9. Tnx, the post was really usefull. It worked in thunderbird with SSL checked (checking SSL automagically sets the correct ports) making all your mailing (somewhat) secure.

  10. Hi,

I’m new to this service and am having problems myself.
I set the name of the mailbox to xiphic@gmx.com and incoming to mail.gmx.com and I get a timed out error… I’m using the ports you suggested… any ideas?

  17. GMX and iphone mail app:

Hi, I just saw on the GMX Forum that GMX SSL is only available for incoming connections (downloading email) but Not for outgoing connections (sending email) This is what a moderator of the forum said. Does anyone know, per sure, if GMX is actually encrypting outgoing and incoming connectios through Mail clients such as the iPhone mail app?

I think GMX is a Superb email service, but if it lacks Full SSL Sessions I may rather not to use it until they do, or at least when using Hot Spots.

    Thanks.

  19. My problem is I don’t have an .com
end to my address, instead it is .us so the above settings don’t work with Postbox Any suggestions

  20. @kates:

I think it should work even if you have a gmx.us address.

    http://email.about.com/od/outlookexpresstips/qt/et_get_free_gmx.htm

    Have you tried the settings?

If however the limitation is due to Postbox then I suggest using a different email client.

  22. I have gmx through Ibismail on my iphone, seems to work for around half a day and then won’t connect until I change the port settings to something else. As soon as I do it works for another 6 hours??? My router doesn’t have a the firewall switched on.

    Very confused!

  25. These notes have helped numerous times. I haven’t written them down myself because your fridge is always up and running.

    Yeah, and gmail is terrible.
